Tuesday was the tough day for a lot of people with the NFL’s roster cut down to a 53-man roster unfolded and many former Ole Miss players received the bad news of not being on a Sunday roster, for now.

On Wednesday the bad news was replaced with good news and a door re-opening for several NFL Rebels to earn their way to playing on Sundays still.

NFL teams announced their practice squad rosters 24 hours after trimming their official team rosters and while not all the transactions are completed or announced there are six former Ole Miss players back with a team.

Most are with the same team that cut them a day prior.

The biggest shock to many, including Baltimore Ravens fans, was the release of Dayton Wade after a promising and standout preseason. One of the top receivers, stats-wise, Wade earned the affection and support of the Ravens fanbase.

But one day later the Ravens organization signed the former Ole Miss walk-on to its practice squad. A move that might have been discussed with Wade when the decision to cut him took place.

When the same team that cuts a player signs them to the practice squad more times than not there is a financial reason attached to doing so.

Other rookies that were trying to make it on a roster that landed on a practice squad include Mason Brooks back with the Panthers a day later as is Isaac Ukwu after the Lions cut him. Jeremiah Jean-Baptiste also gets to stay in Los Angeles as the Chargers retained him a day after cutting him from the 53-man roster.

Here is the current and updated list of former Ole Miss players signed to a NFL practice roster:

  • Dayton Wade – Baltimore Ravens
  • Mason Brooks – Carolina Panthers
  • Ben Brown – Las Vegas Raiders
  • Laquon Treadwell – Indianapolis Colts
  • Jeremiah Jean-Baptiste – Los Angeles Chargers
  • Isaac Ukwu – Detroit Lions
  • C.J. Moore – Detroit Lions

As of this article being published, running backs Zach Evans and Snoop Conner are still looking to join a roster after being cut by the Rams and Dallas Cowboys, respectively. The same goes for former Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral after the Minnesota Vikings waived him on Monday. Cornerback Zamari Walton is also waiting to see if he can sign onto a practice squad after being cut by the Chargers.

Former Ole Miss offensive lineman Royce Newman was picked up off waivers by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following a three-year stint with the Green Bay Packers.
