Ole Miss is halfway through its 2023 season with the bye this weekend serving as a true divider between first six games and the second six games.

With the No. 13 Rebels (5-1, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) taking a breather and recovering from a tough stretch to start the season it is a good time to reset some key areas of the roster, including where true freshmen stand in terms of a redshirt option.

There are a handful of freshmen that have already lost out on the opportunity to redshirt this fall by playing in more than four games. Most of the names on the list will not surprise Ole Miss fans, but there are one or two that are eyebrow raisers.

On top of the list is linebacker Suntarine Perkins who has played in all six games in varying degrees. As the season has progressed Perkins has seen his snap counts increase but his role in the defense’s game plan has been decreased at times.

Defensive coordinator Pete Golding is one of, if not the biggest, Perkins supporter and voiced that during fall camp. Perkins was expected to be heavily included in this year’s defense and that did not take long to come to fruition. He currently is fifth on the team in tackles with 24 and leads the team in sacks with 3.5.

On Monday Perkins was named to On3’s Midseason True Freshman All-American Team.

One of the freshmen that has already burned their redshirt and could be a shock to some is cornerback AJ Brown. Despite only 14 snaps on defense, according to Pro Football Focus, Brown has become a regular on special teams, playing in all six games.

Last Saturday’s Arkansas game saw freshman receiver Ayden Williams burn his redshirt as well, playing in his fifth game of the season. Playing 91 snaps, Williams has five catches for 66 yards.

Below is the full list of Ole Miss freshmen who have and have not burned through their redshirt.

Freshmen who have burned redshirt:

  • Suntarine Perkins – 6 games
  • AJ Brown – 6 games
