The nation’s No. 1 Safety, Jonah Williams, is set to come off the board August 24th. There has been a ton of recent talk of a summer commitment, and now the Ball (Tex.) product has locked in a date. The five finalists are LSU, Oregon, Texas, Texas A&M, and USC, with the latter likely on the outside looking in here. Williams is scheduled to be in Austin tomorrow for Texas’ UT Bash recruiting event, along with fellow Oregon target Michael Terry III. The 6’3 206-pound Safety is also expected to be in Baton Rogue for LSU’s Bayou Splash event on Friday.

My Take

This is an incredibly difficult commitment for me to put a prediction on, so at this time I won’t. That being said, every team (besides USC) feels as if they have a great chance to win the Jonah Williams sweepstakes. Recently it has been LSU making a major push and they have received the first On3 RPM pick from “The Bengal Tiger’s” Billy Embody. In a similar manner as other top tier talent’s recruitments go, the schools will likely send in their offers to the bidding table. I feel decent about where Oregon sits but certainly not as good as I did a week ago.

Scouting Report

On3 writes this on Jonah Williams in regards to the next level:

“Jumbo safety prospect with the size, athleticism and playmaking instincts to be a potential queen on the chessboard for defensive coordinators. Has linebacker size with the athleticism of a top defensive back. Measured in at 6-foot-3 ⅛, 206 pounds with 32.25-inch arms at the On3 Elite Series prior to his senior season. Registers as a top athlete in the combine setting. A true three-phase playmaker on Friday nights, lining up at safety, wide receiver and punt returner. An easy, fluid mover with a good top gear. Covers ground in a hurry. Shows outstanding range in coverage. Has high-level ball skills with the ability to track the football over his shoulder. Had four interceptions as a junior along with eight pass breakups. Capable of covering tight ends and receivers out of the slot. Has the skill level to be a wide receiver prospect if he wanted. A two-sport standout, as a talented baseball player who throws 94 MPH as a left-handed pitcher. Can continue making strides with his form and physicality as a tackler. Could potentially outgrow the safety spot due to his bigger frame. Rare movement skills and size give him the upside to be a game-changing movable piece at the college and pro level.”

On3 also writes a player comparison to Washington Commanders Safety Jeremy Chinn:

“Jonah Williams’ size, athleticism and ball skills remind us of Jeremy Chinn. Williams is a much more established high school prospect than Chinn was.”
