The main topic of discussion for every Oregon fan at the moment is: What will the Ducks’ quarterback situation be in 2023?
Oregon’s starting quarterback, Bo Nix, delivered one of the most productive seasons by a signal-caller in program history in 2022. His NFL Draft stock has soared as a result. But Nix still has one year of eligibility remaining, and there is every possibility he will return to Eugene for the 2023 campaign.
On Friday, Nix met with reporters for the first time since Oregon’s loss at Oregon State to end the regular season and was asked what his plan is for 2023.
“Yeah, I wanna know, too,” Nix said. “I’m still trying to figure things out myself and will decide later.”
When asked what factors will go into his decision, Nix offered this.
“There are a few things with both sides that you’ve gotta look at,” Nix said. “But as I’m putting that together, I’m just trying to get ready for (the Dec. 28 Holiday bowl) and get ready for Noth Carolina and do well in practice and continue to get better myself.”
Nix said he has not requested feedback on his potential NFL Draft prospects from College Advisory Committee, because he is too old. Last year, he did receive feedback from the CAC and was told he would be a “later round” pick.
He said the decision to play in the Holiday was an easy one.
“I just really enjoy playing football,” Nix said. “I enjoy playing for Oregon. I enjoy playing for coach Lanning. So, anytime I have that opportunity I’m gonna make the most of it.”
The timing of Nix’s decision, of course, is crucial.
The Ducks are currently in the midst of a recruiting battle for 5-star quarterback commit Dante Moore. Reserve quarterback Jay Butterfield has already entered the transfer portal, and there has been speculation that backup Ty Thompson could do the same.

Whether Nix opts to return for one last season with the Ducks, or enter the Draft will have major ramifications for the program moving forward.
So, when does he expect to come to a decision?
“I hope it’s as soon as possible,” Nix said. “I’m like you guys. I’m ready to know my decision. It’s not an easy process; it’s one of the toughest things I’ve had to do. But it’s rewarding, regardless of what happens.”
Nix said he has been helping recruit players to Oregon by way of the transfer portal and will continue to do so whether he opts to return to school next season or not.
“You always want to leave somewhere better than you found it,” Nix said. “So, if I can help Oregon, where I’m at right this second, help them sign a guy for next year regardless of whether I’m here or not, that’s a really important thing.
“If that kid’s coming because I’m gonna be here then they’re still going to be here if I leave, regardless, next year. So they can’t just come because I’m gonna be here. There are a lot of other things that are part of the decision; they’ve got to come because they feel like they’re a fit for Oregon.
“But at the same time, if I’m here going through bowl prep, and I’m still a part of this team, I’m gonna help the team as best I can.”
