The Carolina Panthers selected former Oregon EDGE DJ Johnson with the 80th overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft on Friday.

Johnson, who led the Ducks in sacks last season, becomes the second Oregon edge defender to be selected in as many seasons after the New York Giants selected Kayvon Thibodeaux with the fifth overall pick last year.

With his selection, Johnson becomes the program’s second player off the board in this year’s draft. On Thursday, the New England Patriots selected cornerback Christian Gonzalez with the 17th overall pick.

Last season, Johnson led the Ducks with 6.0 sacks and was second on the team with 8.5 tackles for loss. He tallied 39 tackles, including 15 solo stops. For a program that struggled to consistently pressure opposing quarterbacks, he was far and away Oregon’s most productive pass-rusher.

In five seasons with the Ducks, Johnson recorded 9.0 sacks and 15.0 tackles for loss. Early in his Oregon career, he split time at tight end and edge rusher.

The No. 75 overall prospect in the class of 2017, Johnson originally enrolled at Miami out of high school and spent one year with the Hurricanes before transferring to Oregon in 2018.

With Johnson and Gonzalez off the board, a handful of former Ducks will be hoping to hear their names called as the Draft continues.

Inside linebacker Noah Sewell, offensive linemen Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu, T.J. Bass, Alex Forsyth, and Ryan Walk, and defensive back Bennett Williams, and receiver Chase Cota are among the former Oregon standouts who could potentially be selected.
