It’s going to be hard to argue coaches Matt Powledge and Demetrice Martin haven’t been holding up their end of the bargain. The defensive back coaching duo accounts for half of the 10 commits in the 2023 class for Oregon.

Additionally they have landed 3 of the last 4 commits for Oregon. The latest coming from Rainier Beach (Wash.) cornerback Caleb Presley on Tuesday.

At the moment, this group is getting really, really full. Which is a good position for these coaches to be in. The biggest priority now will be holding on to what you have while doing a bit of ‘big game’ hunting in the Fall.

I could see Oregon open to adding maybe 1 more to this group but also not being necessary. And the only way they would add more than one, would be if it’s an elite player.

The one I would categorize as not elite but a key remaining target is Junipero Serra (Calif.) speedster Rodrick Pleasant. If I were a betting man today, he’d be the odds-on favorite to round out this group for Oregon.

Pleasant is a key West coast target for Demetrice Martin and one the Ducks will continue to recruit. I like where Oregon stands currently with USC not really pushing for him at the moment.

After that becomes some names to keep tabs on but don’t count on.

Lake Charles (La.) CB Curley Reed

Long Beach Poly (Calif.) DB Daylen Austin

Martin (Texas) DB Javien Toviano

Not a lot of names. And that’s not a bad thing, because quite frankly there isn’t much room. Additionally this will list will change over the coming months.

Early commitments tend to lead to more decommitments. And I’m sure Oregon is tracking a few names into Fall we could hear more about.

As I said in the intro however, is there really isn’t much room left. Hold on to the guys you have committed, continue with Pleasant and a few others to figure out interest. But originally the staff were looking at 5-6 DB’s in this class and they are already at 5.
