Dan Lanning Addresses Sluggish 24-14 Win Over Idaho
Oregon Football had its worst season-opening performance since the Ducks lost to Georgia in coach Dan Lanning’s first game.
This time, the circumstances were a little different.
Instead of playing the eventual national champion, Oregon matched up with Idaho, an FCS team.
The result was a tepid 24-14 victory that left most fans wanting more.
Below are Dan Lanning‘s most notable quotes from his week one postgame press conference:
Opening Statement:
“Different from what we thought it might look like. Gotta give credit to Idaho. We didn’t hit some of the explosives we thought we would create offensively.”
On Oregon’s defensive performance:
“Some positives, some growth moments as well. Didn’t execute in those situations (trick plays).”
On the offensive line’s execution:
“Have to evaluate how we can get better there. That’s something we can attack and improve for sure.”
On downfield passing:
“We have to be a team that can generate some explosive plays and we weren’t able to do that today.”
On explosive plays and Dillon Gabriel‘s lack of rushing:
“I think you have to evaluate every team you’re playing and see what they’re doing schematically. I don’t think it’s always smart to run your quarterback whenever you have the opportunity.”

On productivity from the tight end room:
“We have a really good tight end group and one we want to get the ball to. Knowing that you have weapons there, you gotta take advantage of that.”
On Tysheem Johnson and Jeffrey Bassa‘s absences:
“I think those guys will be able to go for us in the future.”
On the discrepancy between statistics and score:
“We don’t live in hypotheticals. That’s the score of the game. That’s the reality when they stop us on fourth down sometimes. The score was what the score was.”
On expectations for the team:
“Every single game we’re finding things we can clean up.”
On preparing for Idaho’s trick plays:
“We were aware of it. We had some things in place for those but weren’t able to take advantage.”
On Matayo Uiagalelei‘s improvement:
“Proud of where Matayo’s at and seeing him continue to grow will be great for us in the future.”
On Bryce Boettcher‘s play in lieu of Jeffrey Bassa:
“I know it means a lot to him and he cares. We’ll have to watch film and see how that went.”
Lanning was understandably a bit tense and short-spoken following what was a performance that most would consider subpar.
It seems to me that most of Oregon’s issues are fixable but I’m sure practice will be a warzone this week as the Ducks prepare for a much more respected opponent in Boise State.
