Dan Lanning details reason for Oregon receiver Caleb Chapman's absence in season-opener
One player who was notably absent from Oregon’s participation chart after Saturday’s season-opener is senior wideout Caleb Chapman.
After transferring in from Texas A&M last spring, Chapman had a strong fall camp and was talked about glowingly by the Ducks’ coaches and players. Along with Troy Franklin, he’s expected to be one of the top options at “X” receiver for Oregon this season.
So it came as somewhat of a surprise that Chapman did not play a single snap against Georgia in Atlanta.
On Wednesday, Oregon coach Dan Lanning was asked if Chapman’s absence was a coach’s decision.
“No, he’s been dinged up,” Lanning said. “He’s dealing with some hamstring and hip flexor injuries. I’m certainly hopeful that we can get him back. He continues to stay working on treatment.”

A former 4-star recruit who played four seasons with the Aggies, Chapman has been plagued by injuries throughout his college career. He tore his left anterior cruciate ligament as a true freshman in 2018 and tore his right ACL in 2020. Last season, he got off to a strong start but suffered a lisfranc injury after just six games.
Chapman was suited up at practice on Wednesday during the portion that was open to reporters.
In Oregon’s loss to the Bulldogs, tight end Terrance Ferguson was the Ducks’ most productive pass-catcher and finished the day with four catches for 37 yards. Troy Franklin, Chase Cota, and Kris Hutson were the three receivers Oregon announced as starters against Georgia.
