Dan Lanning, Dillon Gabriel, Bryce Boettcher, Tez Johnson Recap Big Ten Championship

by:Linden Hile12/08/24

The Oregon Ducks got their biggest win of the year Saturday against Penn State who entered the game 11-1 on the year. Following the action, coach Dan Lanning, quarterback Dillon Gabriel, wide receiver Tez Johnson, and linebacker Bryce Boettcher joined media to recap tonight’s win.

Below are the most notable questions and quotes from Oregon’s postgame press conference as well as my thoughts at the end.

Opening Statement:

Lanning: “I don’t have a lot to say except how proud I am of these guys. We’ve talked about moments this year where guys had to put each other on their back and I thought the offense did an unbelievable job, thought the defense made a critical stop when it mattered most.”

“That offense is really hard to stop and it was a battle so I’m really proud of our players.”

Gabriel on playing his best in big moments:

“You live for these moments and you dream of these moments and I want to take full advantage of it. You just want to represent them the right way and these guys have an edge to them so I’m appreciative of them. Our big-time players made big-time plays in these moments.”

Lanning on first-year Big Ten success:

“I’m really proud of our players, I didn’t have anything to do with that. I’m really proud of their effort tonight and I thought that showed up.”

Gabriel on Oregon’s tight end group:

“I love those guys. They’re an extremely talented group and very unselfish.”

“I’m proud of them, they just maximize the moment. Ferg (tight end Terrance Ferguson) is a special person, I love him to death.”

Lanning on the tangibility of a national title:

“I’ll be honest it’s the furthest thing from my mind right now. It takes work so I’m asking how we can improve and how we can get better.”

Boettcher on Penn State’s offense:

“We prepared to face the best and they’re a great offense. Our preparation is unmatched and we try to do all of our assignments but they’re a great team, credit to them.”

Johnson on Kenyon Sadiq’s hurdle touchdown:

“That’s normal for Kenyon. He’s a really talented tight end and the way he contributes to the team is unbelievable.”

Lanning on maintaining composure:

“Our guys understand the reset button. They know the job’s not done until the job’s done.”

Linden’s take:

It was great to get a panel interview for the Ducks and they handled business like you’d expect. The Ducks got a win that secures a first round playoff bye and an additional week of rest late in the year.

Oregon will have to wait some time to know its next opponent but this team is surging into the playoffs.
