Dan Lanning 'Disappointed' in Oregon's Process vs. Idaho
Like many Duck fans, head coach Dan Lanning was disappointed in what he saw unfold in Autzen Stadium over the weekend.
He saw an Oregon team that was heavily favored to win struggle to slam the door on an FCS opponent in the Idaho Vandals. This comes after almost exactly a year ago to the date (September 2, 2023) the Ducks coasted to an 81-7 win over the Portland State Vikings, also an FCS opponent, to open the season.
Lanning addressed his team following Saturday’s 24-14 win over Idaho and expressed his disappointment in Oregon’s process in Week 1.
“I’m disappointed in the process tonight,” Lanning said in an Oregon recap video posted Monday. “Not the result, the process. Process wasn’t sharp enough.”

He’s never been a coach to sugarcoat things, and that’s not going to start now. His post-game message wasn’t all criticism either, as he also gave a tip of the cap to Jason Eck and the Vandals.

“I’m not gonna let you down by saying ‘great win.’ That’s not the way I feel. Hey they played a good game, credit to them. Do not discredit anything that they did. But I want to own our standard. Our standard doesn’t change regardless of who we play. Who we playing? We’re playing us. We’re playing Oregon.”
He wrapped up his speech by turning the page to Oregon’s next opponent Boise State, and urging his players to learn from what happened on Saturday, while continuing to chase the standard that has been set in Eugene. The same standard that has led the Ducks to a 23-5 overall recording under during his tenure.
“So when you play Oregon next week, what’s your measure? What you do is you dust yourself off and say ‘here’s where I can get better. Here’s where I can make my team better.’ Every one of you should be really proud to wear that green. I promise you I’m proud to coach you. A great team can learn from wins. Don’t make adversity the reason you learn. Can you learn from tonight?”
