Dan Lanning gives timeline for assembling Oregon coaching staff
One of the more significant acts early in Dan Lanning’s Oregon tenure will be assembling his coaching staff.
Lanning will be in Eugene for just a few more days before he returns to Georgia to help the Bulldogs prepare for the College Football Playoff. But even while he is back in Athens, Lanning will be working to hire a staff of assistants in order to hit the ground running once he returns to Eugene.
But don’t expect a sudden flurry of hires this week. Lanning made clear on Monday that he wants to get this thing right, and he’s willing to wait if necessary.
“In my opinion, right is more important than fast,” Lanning said when asked about his timeline for hiring assistants. “We’re gonna be right. We’re gonna be right in our approach when it comes to hiring staff.”
Word has already surfaced that some high-caliber coaches could join Lanning’s Oregon staff. It was reported Sunday that he is targeting Florida State offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham for the same position at Oregon.
It has also been reported that Oregon is potentially targeting Jacksonville Jaguars defensive line coach Tosh Lupoi.
“We have to move quick, right? We have to be efficient,” Lanning said. “But it doesn’t mean we have to make a wrong decision. We have time. There are unlimited resources here at this place and there are really good people here in this organization that we can lean on.”
There have been no details released yet on what Lanning’s exact budget will be for piecing together his staff. Details of his contract will likely be released Tuesday, and it’s not yet apparent if his staff budget will be made public.

Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens met with reporters after Lanning’s Monday press conference and was asked about the $9 million buyout that Miami paid Oregon when it hired former Ducks’ coach Mario Cristobal.
Specifically, Mullens was asked where that money gets allocated.
“It gets allocated to our department,” Mullens said. “There’s a lot of transition costs. So that’s obviously not free and clear. We may have some buyouts to pay for coaches and staff that we don’t retain. Obviously all the transition costs of all the buyouts we may have to pay — moving expenses.
“I’m not quite clear where it will net out. But coming out of the pandemic, we can use whatever net revenue we will get.”
Mullens was then asked if some or all of that $9 million will be at Lanning’s disposal.
“That’s not how we monitor our funds. Everything is in the athletic department revenue and athletic department expenses. Obviously, we allocate it accordingly. We’re making a significant investment in football, as we always have, and e will continue to do that.”
