On Tuesday, April 1, (not a joke) Oregon held its first practice in the month of April and only its third this Spring. If you didn’t know, it has been announced all practices will be closed to the media. Previously there were glimpses here and there for 15-20 minute windows but that won’t happen in April.

Following that first April practice, Dan Lanning met with local media to answer some questions. As you know by now, he ain’t talking injuries or much about the performance of individuals.

But here are the bulk of the questions and answers from Lanning in the available Q&A period Tuesday.

Opening Statement:

“Good day, coming back from Spring break. I think this is one of those practices you want to figure out where guys are at over the break. We took some good steps forward but there’s a lot of room for us to improve. We’ve got a lot of talent but not a lot of experience like we’ve talked about before. I’m excited about the direction of our guys. They want to get better, they want to improve. But that’s what these practices are for.”

On Bryce Boettcher’s Leadership:

“It’s not new to him. But I still want to hear his voice out there at practice more and more. It’s always shown up as a player. I have high expectations for what he looks like on the field. But he’s been a really good player and a really good leader for us.”

On (Potential) Young Leaders:

“We want everyone on this team who is capable of being a leader to be a leader. I don’t care how old you are, how many snaps you’ve taken. Where can you contribute, how can you help?”

On Isaiah World:

“Great athleticism and size. God doesn’t make very many people like that. He’s got a great spirit every day. The right mindset and attitude.”

On Spring Growth:

“We’ll have scrimmages. not this Saturday but the next two Saturday’s. Great benefit from the live reps. We have to build up our ability to go and compete in a scrimmage. We’re in the build phase. Then we’ll have three opportunities to evaluate these guys in live reps.”

On Rod Pleasant/Cornerbacks:

“Rod’s available where he is. Won’t be an every day thing because of track. We have really good length in that group. But we lack experience there but that’s your job as a coach.”

Changes for Bryce focusing on Football:

“Just his body. Always been a guy that’s always wanted to have more size at linebacker. It’s hard to do that playing baseball in the Spring.”

Challenges of Spring practice:

“What’s great about football is that every single day is a different challenge. And you don’t know what it’s going to be until you get out of bed. For us every single day those guys step into a class room, or meeting room there should be objectives and how you grade that is how you execute.”

On Jamari Johnson:

“Great kid, great family. Really excited about him. Obviously he’s got an injury he’s coming off of.”

On Attendance of QB’s at Pro Day:

“The proof is in the pudding. If you’re a great quarterback and you come to the University of Oregon, you got a chance to have a lot of success. A chance to go perform in Pro Day’s, get drafted high. Go have the opportunity to play in the NFL.”
