Dan Lanning Previews Wisconsin, Recaps Maryland
Oregon coach Dan Lanning addressed media Monday to discuss this week’s game, thoughts from Maryland on Saturday, and more ahead of the Ducks’ matchup with the Wisconsin Badgers. Below are the most notable questions and quotes from Lanning’s press conference as well as my thoughts at the end.
Opening Statement:
“Exciting week for the Ducks, basketball’s off to a hot start but I’m excited for this week so with that we can open it up to questions.”
On Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell:
“He’s a great coach. He’s proven that he can develop teams and it speaks to the kind of culture he can create. Things are starting to come together for them at Wisconsin.”
On what the Badgers’ offensive line presents:
“They’re big. They have the ability to move you and you look and say ‘that’s what a Wisconsin offensive line looks like’.”
On how the team’s responded to penalty issues against Maryland:
“They responded well. Some of them were warranted for sure. We can definitely improve in our techniques and our execution.”
On what Wisconsin’s safeties do well:
“They’re good tacklers. They do a great job disguising coverages and this is one of the more talented secondaries we’ve seen. You see that show up with them.”
On Dave Iuli vs Kawika Rogers at right guard:
“I think they both have different strengths and weaknesses. I think they can both play winning football and have earned the opportunity to play.”
On the roughing the punter penalty against cornerback Daylen Austin:
“When the punters are in the pocket they’re protected so we’ve shown a clip before where that was relevant. It’s one of the ones we talk about but ultimately you say ‘go for the ball’ in that situation.”

On the availability of running back Jordan James and defensive lineman Jordan Burch:
“We’ll take it day by day this week and continue to evaluate that but I anticipate both of those guys being available.”
On concluding a long stretch with no bye on Saturday:
“I’m not done. Our guys are enjoying the work and the challenge of this new conference. It’s been a lot of fun for us but we have more work to do.”
Linden’s Take:
It was positive, if unsurprising to hear that James and Burch are expected to be good to go this weekend. Both will be needed in what figures to be a good test for the Ducks in a difficult environment.
It was interesting that Lanning quoted both Rogers and Iuli having earned playing time at guard and while I’m sure this is the case, I’d also imagine the staff has a sense of which one is the 1A heading into this weekend. As noted, it’s been a long stretch of games for Oregon who hasn’t had a bye since after the matchup against Oregon State in September.
These spots can be difficult for teams that are getting more knicked up as the season goes but Lanning & Co. seem ready for the challenge.
