Oregon’s season-opener against Georgia in Atlanta is just nine days away, and the Ducks are yet to publicly reveal who will be their starting quarterback.
When fall camp began at the start of August, Jay Butterfield, Bo Nix, and Ty Thompson were all in the mix to be the program’s No. 1 signal caller. On Thursday, following Oregon’s 18th preseason practice, head coach Dan Lanning met with reporters and was asked if he and offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham have settled on a starter yet.
“I’m not telling you,” Lanning said with a slight smile.
Later, Lanning was asked if he might ultimately opt to wait until kickoff in Atlanta on Sept. 3 to reveal his starter.
“When you guys see that first snap, yeah, we’ll see who’s out there on the field,” Lanning said. “I’m not playing quarterback — I’ll tell you that.”

After Oregon’s first scrimmage two weeks ago, Lanning said that none of the Ducks’ three quarterbacks had “separated themselves” at that point. A week later, after the team’s second scrimmage, he said there still weren’t enough “data points” for he and Dillingham to decide on a starter.
Now, it sounds as though the starter may be revealed in the minutes leading up to kickoff at Mercedes Benz Stadium.
