Dan Lanning Recaps Oregon vs Ohio State

by:Linden Hile10/12/24

Following what can be considered the biggest win in Oregon football history, coach Dan Lanning spoke to media to address an unbelievable win over visiting Ohio State. Below are the most notable questions and quotes from Lanning’s presser as well as my thoughts at the end.

Opening Statement

“Anyone got a heart rate monitor? What an unbelievable atmosphere tonight. We talked all week about taking jabs. It’s not about throwing haymakers, it’s about taking jabs and moving to the next play. That’s a great team we just played. I couldn’t be more proud of our guys and our coaches.”

On what Jordan James brought to the Ducks tonight:

“Jordan runs like he’s pissed off. All the time. We see it every day in practice. He took advantage of the opportunities he got today. The blocking, the o-line, the schematic advantages from Will (Stein), giving us an opportunity to create a big run.”

On the significance of this win:

“This game is such an emotional game. Relief is one of the biggest feelings we feel. I’m really excited to figure out what we can attack and improve.”

On the option keeper in the fourth quarter to put Oregon ahead:

“Unbelievable decision by Dillon there. I don’t know how many times he got to see that exact look but if you look at that play you’re gonna see bodies on bodies down the field.”

On Jordan Burch‘s injury:

“That’s a really talented team we just played. You don’t replace a Jordan, he’s been unbelievable this season. We thought there might be a chance we could see him out there but you talk about next man up and some guys showed up tonight.”

On Dillon Gabriel‘s performance:

“I can’t say enough great things about Dillon. Every time I looked in his eyes tonight I saw a guy that was composed and ready for the next moment. Proud of his performance and I know he’d tell you he’s proud of the people around him.”

On generating turnovers and their significance:

“I felt great about our kickoff option and the chance we could hit one of them and get it back. Thought it was a great example of our guys not flinching and they executed at a really high level.”

On the importance of this win for the University of Oregon:

“Huge man. Oregon’s a winner. Our fans were camping out at 10 last night. I don’t know if anyone sat down the entire game. I had to cover my ear to do any communicating and they did an unbelievable job.”

On what allowed Gabriel to be ready for this moment:

“It’s hard to replace experience. This guy’s been part of games that are really big moments. Being able to say the next play’s the most important play is really what got him there.”

On limiting Ohio State’s run game:

“It was a really big focus for us. Every one of their losses their opponent out-rushed them. We knew they were going to be hard to run against so that was a goal for us all week.”

Linden’s Take

It’s hard to say enough about the importance of this win and what it means for Oregon. With practically every recruit under the sun on hand for tonight’s game as well as the largest crowd in Autzen Stadium history, it couldn’t have come at a better time.

This game could basically be seen as a coin flip but as always, it’s the final score that matters. The Ducks did what they had to do and set themselves up for a possible No. 1 ranking tomorrow.
