Dan Lanning speaks on Oregon's win over Maryland
Following the Ducks 39-18 victory at home against Maryland, Dan Lanning got the opportunity to recap the game. In doing so, Lanning sounded off on some issues he had with the team’s execution tonight.
Lanning started the postgame presser with a few words of his own before questions.
“Nice to walk away with a victory, that being said I feel like we can play a whole lot better.” Lanning then recognized QB Dillon Gabriel for breaking the FBS record for career touchdowns.
On the game that DE Jordan Burch had:
Before getting into the thick of the question Lanning updated the health of Burch saying the following. “I think he’s fine, just tweaked his ankle.”
“I’ll have to watch the film, but obviously Jordan had some game-changing plays in this game.”
On the amount of penalties tonight:
“Poor performance for us, we got to go back and look at the film to eliminate that. We didn’t play clean, so I don’t know if we were distracted, not focused… I feel like our guys had good energy and enthusiasm but we put ourselves in some bad spots on defense. Giving them opportunities for first downs, hurt ourselves with some pre-snap penalties on offense so it’s definitely something for us to attack and clean up.”
On the Defensive Line getting 6 PBU’s:
“We knew the ball was going to be coming out quick, it was something that we anticipated. We felt there was going to be more of an opportunity to make more PBU’s on the defensive line than sacks. That was a big point of emphasis and those guys executed that.”
On the team’s execution:
“I think generally there’s always a correlation between how you practice and how you play. That being said, I don’t think we necessarily had a bad week of practice, but there’s definitely some points of improvement for us.”

On the gameplan to come out passing:
“We felt like this was a team we were going to be able to create some explosive passes against, and that didn’t really happen. We didn’t do a great job there, somewhere to improve, but we were able to kinda lean back on our run game there in the second half.”
On how Dave Iuli and Gary Bryant Jr can help the team:
“Continue to get better, focus on where can they help this team, improve and make us the best version of ourselves.”
On containing Maryland’s Wideouts:
“They’re really good wideouts, we felt like they’re some of the best we’ve gone against this year. Being able to come out and play aggressively, put our guys on islands sometimes, I think they executed well. That being said, I think our technique can definitely be cleaned up.”
On Jordan James only receiving one second half carry:
“I’ll have to evaluate, I think he could’ve gone back in, I was being kinda conscientious of where he was.”
