Dan Lanning speaks with the media after Day 11 of Fall Camp

This Thursday Oregon began its two-part Spring ball practices. They will have two quick practices this week then break for the rest of March for Spring break. Both of the practices will be closed to the media.

Which means we got Dan Lanning after practice to talk about No. 1 in the books. Oregon was in Autzen stadium today with only staff and recruits on hand to watch. Here are the highlights from his media session with those present after today’s practice.

Opening Statement:

“Good day one. I think I’ve said it before, I haven’t been around a lot of day ones that weren’t great. Our guys did a good job. They’re playing with some great energy and enthusiasm. It’s going to be about how we can learn and grow from here.”

On Finding Leadership:

“We’re still in the early phases of that. That’s one thing I was hoping to see today. We saw some of that. We’re not returning a ton of experience but we’re returning a ton of talented players. It’s about those guys stepping up, creating leadership, creating the standard for our team.”

On having a Spring Game:

“I think it’s the best way for us to get better. We’re going to play football in the Spring game. I mentioned new faces I think that’s a great opportunity to create a gameday environment for those players. It’s the right way to cap off the Spring. As long as I’m here we’ll be doing Spring games.”

On the QB Room:

“I love the group that we’ve got. Some guys bring different skill sets. It’s a competition for us everywhere on the field. That’s how we grow.”

On Questions about Team:

“There’s some great players but they don’t have that same experience we had last year. You don’t figure that out in one spring practice. We’re a team that can attack you in different ways. “

On Evaluating Young Guys:

“I’m just looking for growth. Don’t let your highs get too high or your lows get too low. There’s opportunities to grow and improve.”

On Dakorien Moore:

“We encourage every guy in our program, you don’t have to be a senior to be a leader. And Dakorien as well as other players are taking advantage of that opportunity to lead. We’re looking for people to step up.”

On Dillon Thieneman:

“He’s a dynamic player on film. And has a great family. A guy that is infatuated with football. Infatuated with the extra work. There’s probably not a day goes by that Dillon isn’t in the film room or in rehab or getting an extra workout. He’s establishing some standards for the DB group. He’s never satisfied.”

On Shuffling Pieces this Spring:

“We’ll do what we’ve done in the past. It’s important to shuffle players. Injuries happen. That’s really important across all positions to challenge how we grow.”

On Ross Douglas:

“Been really pleased with coach Douglas so far. The energy he brings on the field. He obviously had some great references. The amount of time and work he’s putting in to get ahead of the curve. Building relationships with those guys.”

I’m really excited about Bear. He’s a guy that has been through some transition. But when he got to Oregon he hit the ground running. He’s like Dillon doing the extra work too. Really pleased with how he’s attacked things.”

On Injuries:

“We have several guys that are working their way back in.”

On Rose Bowl Loss:

“Life is all about experiences. Every day we walk out here and we grow. You learn from wins, you win from losses. All of the wins from last year have no impact on this season. You just improve.”
