Five-Star Primer for Safety Trey McNutt
It’s Thursday and there are no ‘expected’ commitments today from any Oregon targets. Of course Duck fans watched in angst and saw five-star defensive back DJ Pickett pick LSU over Oregon and others yesterday.
Tomorrow Dan Lanning takes another shot at a five-star with safety Trey McNutt making his college decision. The 5-foot-11, 185-pounder is the No. 20 ranked player in the country and No. 2 ranked safety nationally per the On3 Industry Rankings.
The five-star from Shaker Heights (Ohio) is picking from a group of finalists that includes: Oregon, Ohio State, USC, Florida and Texas A&M. Currently Oregon is the overwhelming favorite according to the Recruiting Prediction Machine at 93%.
“Coach Lanning he’s a different type of coach,” McNutt told On3’s Steve Wiltfong. “And he’s a different type of person. Oregon and their program is on the uprise and going into this season I feel like they’re going to make some moves.”

Scouting Report:
Rangy safety prospect who has the ability come downhill and be force player in the run game, play center field as a single high safety, or match up in man to man in the slot. Tremendous versatility in the secondary at the next level and beyond. Physical and violent player, not afraid to stick his head into traffic and make plays around the line of scrimmage. Excellent burst and trigger out of his backpedal. Strong ability to read and diagnose what offenses are doing in front of him. Need to see more from him in terms of ball production, but has excellent ball skills and ability to high point the football. Excellent upside with a frame that should be able to fill out with ease in a collegiate strength and conditioning program.
