A former Oregon graduate assistant is moving quickly through the coaching ranks and has reportedly been tabbed for an on-field assistant job with another Pac-12 program.

Viane Talamaivao, who served as a GA on Dan Lanning’s staff last season, is expected to become the next offensive line coach at Stanford, according to a report from Matt Zenitz of On3.

In December, Talamaivao departed the Oregon program to become the offensive line coach at Northern Arizona University. But now, it sounds as though he has received an opportunity to join the staff of newly-hired Cardinal head coach Troy Taylor.

A former standout offensive lineman with USC, Talamaivao was an all-Pac-12 honorable mention selection and freshman All-American with the Trojans. He started 37 games at guard for USC between 2014 and 2017 before spending time with the Seattle Seahawks and Jacksonville Jaguars during the 2018 NFL season.

When former Oregon offensive line coach Adrian Klemm left to program to join the New England Patriot’s staff earlier this month Talamaivao’s name circulated on coaching hot boards. Ultimately, Lanning opted to hire former Ducks’ graduate assistant A’Lique Terry to replace Klemm.

Recap of Oregon coaching changes this offseason

As Lanning heads into his second season at the helm of the Oregon program, he’s had quite the busy offseason when it comes to personnel changes.

Former offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Kenny Dillingham left to become Arizona State’s head coach in November.

In December, Ducks’ co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Matt Powledge left to become Baylor’s defensive coordinator.

Oregon replaced Dillingham with former UTSA offensive coordinator Will Stein. Last month, the University announced that it has hired former Tulane defensive coordinator Chris Hampton to fill Powledge’s role.

Over the weekend, Oregon announced the addition of two new off-field staff. Osman Kamara has joined the Ducks as director of player development, and Karl Holmes will serve as assistant director of player development.

In mid-February, Oregon made the hire of Terry as the program’s next offensive line coach official. In the days that followed, the Ducks also added former UCLA staffer Cutter Leftwich as an OL assistant and former Arizona State assistant Mike Cavanaugh as an OL assistant.

“I think as a coach you always have to be prepared for a transition, especially when you’re successful,” Lanning said in December when asked about potential coaching departures. “When you talk about having a staff reach their goals and aspirations, you want to be able to create those opportunities and you have to be prepared for those moments.”
