Former Oregon QB Justin Herbert reaches record-setting contract extension with San Diego Chargers
Former Oregon star Justin Herbert officially has his contract.
According to multiple reports, Herbert and the San Diego Chargers reached a five-year, $262.5 million contract extension on Tuesday. The Chargers confirmed the deal, but have not officially announced details yet.
The deal officially makes Herbert, 25, the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history. The value of his contract surpasses the previous record set by Lamar Jackson, who signed a five-year, $260 million extension with the Baltimore Ravens this offseason.

Last season, Herbert threw for 4,739 yards and 25 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions during his third season with the Chargers. He finished ninth in MVP voting.
The year prior he threw for 5,014 yards, 38 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions and ran for 302 yards and three touchdowns.
Herbert’s 14,089 yards passing yards throughout the 2020-22 seasons are the most of any players in NFL history throughout their first three seasons.
In 2020, Herbert was named the NFL’s Rookie of the Year and set all-time rookie records for completions (396), passing touchdowns (31), combined scores (36), and 300-yard performances (eight).
Herbert, who San Diego selected with the 6th overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, was set to enter the final year of his initial 4-year, $26.5 million deal this fall.

A Eugene, Ore., native who attended Sheldon High School several miles away from Autzen Stadium, Herbert played four seasons with the Ducks and led them to a 29-13 record over 42 career starts.
He is the program’s all-time leader in pass completions (827) and pass attempts (1,293) and holds the program record for most touchdown passes (54) and passing yards (5,904) inside Autzen Stadium.
During his sophomore and junior seasons, Herbert was tabbed as a first-team all-conference selection. As a senior, he received second-team all-conference honors and led the Ducks to a Rose Bowl win over victory in the final game of his college career.
Midway through the 2016 season, Herbert took over as the Ducks’ starting quarterback ahead of Dakota Prukop and became the program’s first true freshman starting quarterback since 1983. He finished the season with 19 passing touchdowns and was one of just four FBS quarterbacks with at least 15 TD passes and less than five interceptions.
According to the On3 Industry Ranking, Herbert was the No. 628 overall prospect in the class of 2016, the No. 39 quarterback prospect, and the No. 5 prospect in the state of Oregon.
