Former Oregon quarterback Robby Ashford will start for Auburn in Week 4
A former blue-chip Oregon quarterback will make the first start of his college career on Saturday.
Robby Ashford, who spent two seasons buried on the depth chart in Eugene, will start for the Auburn Tigers in their Week 4 showdown with Missouri at Jordan-Hare Stadium. He has split time with starter T.J. Finley this season but is officially getting the starting nod today.
A former 4-star signee who was the No. 318 overall prospect in the class of 2020, Ashford was one of the highest-ranked quarterbacks to ever sign with Oregon. He also was a reserve outfielder on the Ducks’ baseball team during the 2021 spring season.
The following fall, the Hoover, Ala., native was surpassed on the depth chart last season by starter Anthony Brown Jr. and fellow underclassmen Ty Thompson and Jay Butterfield.
Ashford hit the transfer portal last January. Later that month, he announced that he had committed to Auburn.
Although this is his first start of the season, Ashford has played in all three of the Tigers’ games. He is 15-for-29 this season with one touchdown and two interceptions. He has also run for 158 yards on 24 carries.

Transfer portal background information
The NCAA transfer portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.
Once a player’s name shows up in the portal, other schools can contact the player. Players can change their minds at any point and withdraw from the portal. However, once a player enters the portal, the current scholarship no longer has to be honored. In other words, if a player enters the portal but decides to stay, the school is not obligated to provide a scholarship anymore.
The database is a normal database, sortable by a variety of topics, including (of course) sport and name. A player’s individual entry includes basic details such as contact info, whether the player was on scholarship and whether the player is transferring as a graduate student.
A player can ask that a “do not contact” tag be placed on the report. In those instances, the players don’t want to be contacted by schools unless they’ve initiated the communication.
