Former Oregon receiver Ashton Cozart commits to transfer to SMU

Former Oregon receiver Ashton Cozart has officially found his next career stop.

After entering the transfer portal in November, Cozart announced on Wednesday that he has committed to transfer to SMU. He is the second former Oregon player to publicly announce his transfer destination. along with former Ducks’ safety Bryan Addison.

A 4-star signee in the 2023 class, Cozart was the No. 215 overall prospect and the No. 30 receiver in the nation. He was one of four of the Ducks’ true freshmen who did not play in a game during the 2023 regular season.

More on Oregon’s transfer portal outlook

Few programs in all of college football experienced a greater amount of transfer portal activity than Oregon did during the 2023 cycle.

A total of 30 Oregon scholarship players entered the portal during the previous two transfer windows — 21 in the winter and nine in the spring. Meanwhile, the Ducks added 14 scholarship players during that same period.

Many of their portal additions — including receiver Tez Johnson, cornerback Khyree Jackson, safety Evan Williams, and right tackle Ajani Cornelius — locked down starting jobs and played key roles during the 2023 season.

This offseason, Oregon will once again look for opportunities to improve its roster by way of the portal.

While speaking with reporters ahead of the Dec. 1 Pac-12 title game, Ducks’ head coach Dan Lanning was asked how he and his staff will go about handling the transfer portal during the month of December while Oregon still has plenty to play for.

“We have people in our organization that always keep their eyes open for what opportunities might be out there to enhance our program. But that’s certainly not my focus right now and certainly not our coach’s focus right now,” Lanning said. “We’re completely focused on what’s ahead of us this season to prepare our players to play as well as we can this season. Not really focused on next season. It’s the same thing I’ve asked our players to do. There are some guys on our team who, probably when the portal opens, will look to other opportunities that could exist. That’s just the reality of college football. But I’ve asked them to put that on the back burner right now and focus on their team. So, we have a bunch of guys committed right now who are working extremely hard out there on the practice field.”
