Jabbar Muhammad Recaps Day Eight of Fall Camp

by:Linden Hile08/09/24

Following Friday’s practice, Oregon Football cornerback Jabbar Muhammad spoke with media and addressed adapting to a new system, competition in the secondary, and more.

The following are questions and quotes from Muhammad’s interview through eight installments of fall camp:

On adapting to Oregon and coach Dan Lanning‘s defensive system:

“I feel pretty good. I was on some Zooms before I got here in the spring but football is football.”

“It’s just different terms and things like that so I pretty much know it all now.”

On whether he’s playing more of the boundary or cornerback positions thus far:

“Both. It doesn’t even matter, we switch things up with whoever’s out there sometimes but it doesn’t matter.”

“I don’t know if it’s because I’m ambidextrous or something but left, right, it doesn’t even matter to me.”

On how he sees Oregon Football’s cornerbacks room:

“Everybody’s talented. Everybody’s honed in on the playbook right now.”

“I’m surprised about the physicality of fall camp. All the corners are taking care of their bodies, getting extra film in and stuff so that’s pretty much what I’ve gotten from it.”

On how his time in Eugene has made him change as a player:

“A lot. One thing that I wanted to get better at was my physicality and you have no choice but to do that here so it was a perfect match for me.”

On what he hopes to see from Oregon’s defense in their upcoming scrimmage:

“Just the communication. We’ve been doing a good job the whole fall camp so I just want to see that follow up into the scrimmage.”

On whether preseason award watchlists and nominations give him extra motivation:

“Nah, nah I haven’t won anything so it doesn’t really do anything for me. I’m honored to be on a watchlist or whatever but I haven’t done anything yet.”

On how he evaluates his own success:

“At the end of the day when you play corner I feel like you’re going to get attacked especially in today’s age with all of the explosive offenses.”

“I go out there with the mindset that they’re gonna come at me you want to be on the good side of that outcome.”

Linden’s take:

Ducks cornerback Jabbar Muhammad sounds confident heading into his first and only year with Oregon Football.

I found his mentioning of the physicality and difficulty of fall camp interesting.

When a player as experienced as Muhammad is surprised by something it’s going to be noteworthy.

Dan Lanning’s coaching influences (Nick Saban and Kirby Smart to name a couple) are all known for having intense fall camps and it seems Lanning is a believer in this methodology as well.

Communication has also been a point of emphasis from other players’ and coaches’ interviews so Muhammad reiterating that makes me think Oregon’s doing what it takes to get where they want to go.
