I realize rankings are basically arbitrary at this point as we wait for the college football playoff rankings. Those are the ones that matter and we all know that.

But rankings are a great resource to try and identify who the top teams are. I love that overall, rankings aren’t quite as hung up on record, for example 8-0 vs 7-1. It’s eyeball test, it’s matchups, schedules. For instance, Ohio State lost as the No. 2 team to the No. 3 team. Dropping them out of the top 10, after a 1-point road loss would be foolish. But it wasn’t long ago we would see that.

The great debate this week is where do you put Oregon? Of course putting them at No. 2 should be automatic. The real debate was if they should get the jump to No. 1 ahead of Texas or not. They did not on the AP poll and I believe that’s a mistake. Yes I’m a homer, but just a few short weeks ago you had no problem doing it when Bama beat Georgia. Of course Bama lost their spot with the biggest upset yet this season, a loss to Vandy.

So as you can guess, I’m putting Oregon at No. 1 in my rankings this week. And just know I’m going heavy on the eyeball test of who looks like the top teams right now. (Who would beat who on a neutral field)

  1. Oregon – Yep, you moved Bama to 1 for beating Georgia, I’m going to put the only team in the country with two top 15 wins at No. 1. Call me a homer.
  2. Texas – No slight to Texas one bit. Great team. Going to find out just how good this weekend. If you whoop Georgia, you can have your spot back.
  3. Ohio State – A 1-point loss to Oregon on the road, they don’t deserve to be dropped much.
  4. Georgia – Fighting their way back but a loss to Texas this weekend, the second of the season, will make Georgia’s road a bit tougher.
  5. Bama – I really don’t know how good this team is. We know they are good but the loss to Vandy, barely beating South Carolina and now you got Tennessee. Kalen Debeor won’t know what hit him if he loses to the other school in Tennessee too.
  6. Miami – Can Louisville get it done this weekend? The 1-point win (gift) over Cal two weeks ago which followed a 4-point win (choke job) by Virginia Tech has fans wondering.
  7. Penn State – Not a top five team. A good team, but not top five. I bet Ohio State wins by 14+ in a couple weeks.
  8. Clemson – They haven’t played anybody, but since the bad season opening loss to Georgia, Clemson has been cooking.
  9. Texas A&M – Don’t look now but the Aggies are getting better. They have LSU in two weeks.
  10. BYU – Can we start to put some respect on BYU’s name? Sure they haven’t played anybody but there’s a bunch of that in the top ten. Who knew BYU vs ASU in a month might actually be a primetime game?
