Cal head coach Justin Wilcox met with reporters on Saturday following his team’s 63-19 win to the Oregon Ducks at Autzen Stadium.

Here is a transcript from Wilcox’s postgame press conference.

On Jaivian Thomas’ injury

“Very scary. He’s at the hospital undergoing tests. He’s alert, interacting with the doctors. He does have movement, feeling in his extremities which is good news, but there’s still a lot of testing that he needs to undergo, so we’re all praying for him.”

On the loss

“I take responsibility for the performance of the team. I need to do a better job to get the team ready and make sure they are given the best chance to be successful. The players share ownership in going out and executing and getting plays, whether it is man-to-man, or zone coverage or tackling, whether its throwing, or catching, or running. Recovering punts, we have to do a better job, obviously that was very difficult. I think there were some tough matchups out there today speed wise and size wise.”

On continuing after Thomas’ injury

“It was very unfortunate, very scary. Nobody wants to see that, and you have to refocus and keep playing. I don’t have a great answer.”

On personal connection and Oregon honoring his father, Dave Wilcox

“Very appreciative to the university and how they treated him. This is not an appropriate setting for me to discuss that.”

On Oregon compared to other top teams the Golden Bears have faced

“I’m more concerned with our team. They’re very talented teams, the level of speed and size and explosiveness is pretty evident. I said a couple years ago, we’re up here playing until the last play of the game. The last couple of years its looked different. We had a harder time so I have to do a better job with the team, continue to develop the players on the team and recruit talented guys that can help us contend. We were far away today, and it showed up, so I’ve got to do a better job.”

On evaluation of his quarterback’s improvement

“It’s hard for me to say right now. I think he’s a competitive guy. I think he stands in there and can continue to compete. We just have to continue to get better. It’s hard for me to say that any player or coach unit really did enough today for us to win the game.”
