Kobe Savage Talks Big Ten Championship Game
Oregon Ducks safety Kobe Savage spoke with media Tuesday and previewed the team’s upcoming Big Ten Championship matchup with the Penn State Nittany Lions. Below are the most notable questions and quotes from Savage’s interview as well as my thoughts at the end.
On what he sees from quarterback Drew Allar and the Penn State offense:
“It’s a very high-tempo offense that reminds me a lot of Kansas (last year). It’s very different with formation variation and using different guys to get the right guys the ball and spread out the defense as well as getting them to miscommunicate.”
On tight end Tyler Warren:
“He’s really good, as you can see he’s punted, snapped the ball, thrown the ball, done some option for them so obviously he’s their best player and we have to be on alert for him.”
On dealing with Warren’s post-catch ability:
“Just tackling low, form tackling will help us and practicing sideline tackling.”
On similarities in offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki‘s offense from his time at Kansas:
“It’s very similar but with different players. I remember they had a tight end they used a lot there so very similar with having two quarterbacks out there at a time and misdirection.

On if the team’s mindset shifts for the postseason:
“Much more just consistency. We’re going to play great teams in the playoffs so it’s a lot of one week seasons.”
Linden’s Take:
Safeties are always one of the most important positions on a defense for defending opposing tight ends so Savage & Co. will have their hands full Saturday. Warren is one of the best tight ends in the nation and leads Penn State in receiving yardage by over 400.
I wasn’t surprised to hear Savage say that the team is maintaining its same mentality for the postseason as it utilized earlier in the year. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
