Live updates: Dan Lanning Week 1 press conference ahead of Oregon vs. Portland State
The second year of the Dan Lanning era officially begins in Eugene this week.
No. 15 Oregon will host Portland State at noon PT this Saturday at Autzen Stadium in Eugene. After posting a 10-3 record in 2022, Lanning and his staff rebuilt the Ducks’ roster through the transfer portal and the 2023 signing class. They will now kick off a 2023 campaign that figures to be one the most competitive in Pac-12 history, with five teams currently featured inside the top 25 of the AP Poll.
Lanning is scheduled to meet with reporters for his weekly press conference at approximately 6:45 p.m. PT this evening. You can find live updates here and in the ScoopDuck forums throughout the evening.
Live updates from Dan Lanning’s Week 1 press conference
— Lanning said Oregon has benefited from more “good on good” periods in the leadup to the 2023 season.
— Lanning on what stands out to home about PSU’s offense: “The biggest thing is their quarterback is extremely dynamic. He’s a guy that’s really fast. It shows up — you can see it. … They have one of the deeper target areas for as far as throws downfield; I think the average target is over 12 yards for them from a passing game standpoint. And they have a couple of dynamic players that they’ve done a good job using on that side of the ball.”
— Lanning said he “thinks” Oregon offensive linemen Jackson Powers-Johnson and Nishad Strother will be available to play this week. He said Powers-Johnson practiced on Monday.
— When asked about the status of linebacker Jestin Jacobs and defensive back Khamari Terrell, Lanning was non-commital and said the coaching staff is still waiting to see who exactly will be available.
— When asked what he learned about his team during fall camp, Lanning said he has a “really competitive team.”

“It doesn’t matter what we’re doing on the field, the guys in that space want to win. … From a toughness standpoint, that is still being shown.”
— When asked for an update on the starting punter competition, Lanning said “You’ll probably see some of both” of Ross James and Luke Dunne.
— When asked about sophomore offensive lineman Dave Iuli, Lanning said he has “taken a big step” since last year.
“He’s got size and he’s got strength — it starts there.”
— Lanning on what he is hoping to see from his team this Saturday, aside from winning: “I think that one of the things that we’ve shown our players is there are more turnovers in college football in Week 1 and the bowl week than any other time of the season. There are more missed tackles in Week 1 and then the bowl game than there are at any other time of the season. That’s because of the long vacancy between games. So, starting there. But ultimately, college football is about explosive plays and takeaways. So those are the things that we want to create. Defensively as far as takeaways, and offensively, we want to create explosives.”
