Big day for Ducks’ recruiting

Dan Lanning’s Oregon program made a big splash on the recruiting trail Friday when it landed a commitment from ’24 4-star quarterback Luke Moga.

Here’s a look at the Ducks’ running list of weekend visitors:

Oregon’s roster breakdown 20 minutes ahead of kickoff:

Live Game Action begins at 1:00pm.

Final: Green 23, Yellow 20. Thompson to Hutson on the final play adds some window dressing.

  • Sure, why not: Nix scrambles for a touchdown run, and that will do it for the competitive portion. 23-14, Green.
  • 4th and 12, and Thompson’s pass to Kasper is incomplete. Green team takes over, and, barring a turnover, will walk away with the win.
  • Lewis knocks in a yard field goal, and the Green team jumps back on top, 16-14. Yellow takes over with 2:10 left.
  • With 6 minutes to play, the Green team forces a three-and-out, giving their offense one more opportunity, trailing 14-13.
  • End of three: Lewis knows in a 44-yard field goal, and the Green team pulls within one, 14-13.
  • Don’t tell me these coaches aren’t competitive: Bo Nix is back in for the Green team, who trail for the first time.
  • Pitch and catch from Thompson to Patrick Herbert. Since the mid-way point of the second quarter, Thompson looks much more relaxed. His ball placement still needs improvement, but every completed pass counts toward building him up. And, as I type this, he hits Kris Hutson for a massive, 78-yard pass. Hutson tripped up at the two yard line, and Jordan James scores on the next play. Somehow, the Yellow team leads, 14-10.
  • Nix’s day is done, and Austin Novosad is in. First play is a completed pass. Good start for the true freshman.
  • Tez Johnson with the catch and run, then acceleration for a touchdown. Nice pass from Thompson to Johnson, who made two guys miss before turning on the jets. Yellow is on the board, now trailing 10-7.
  • Nix will start the second half for the Green team. There is no contact on quarterbacks.
  • Halftime: Green 10, Yellow 0. Nix, Holden, Franklin, and Dowdell looked ready, while Thompson and the Yellow offense was anemic.
  • Thompson hits Tez Johnson (who came back) for a nice completion, then follows it up with a completion to Kyler Kasper. Nice finish to the half for Thompson.
  • Nix to Franklin down the left side, and we have our first touchdown. Holden and Franklin on the same team is unfair, and they clearly look like the 1-2 combo Oregon will need this fall. 10-0 Green team. Yellow takes over with two minutes left in the half.
  • While he hasn’t gotten Nix down, the first half performance of Matayo Uiagalelei has been eye-opening. He’s lined up against both Steven Jones and Josh Conerly, and has been in the backfield on almost every play. He’s caused buzz this spring, and it’s easy to see why.
  • Yellow team with another three-and-out. While not a true indicator due to the split roster, as of now it appears the backup quarterback spot is still wide open. Thompson looks rattled and timid.
  • Tez Johnson a little gimpy after his kickoff return. I would be surprised if we see him again out pure precaution.
  • Score: Camden Lewis knocks in a field goal, and the Green team goes up 3-0. Nix didn’t see a wide-open Sadiq Bay on third down, and the Yellow team held its own after letting Nix and Holden move the ball at will.
  • Holden with another nice catch-and-run, followed by a near touchdown grab by Lowe. The Green team has been the better unit by far so far, although we’re still scoreless with 9:00 left in the half.
  • Traeshon Holden makes his first grab on the next play and explodes down the sideline for a long gain. A nice sight as the Ducks look to replace Chase Cota and Dont’e Thornton.
  • Dante Dowdell gets his first carry, and immediately becomes the biggest back Oregon has had since Royce Freeman. A nice 14-yard gain.
  • End of one: Scoreless in Eugene, as both offenses struggled to move the ball consistently. As a reminder, the roster is split, so this is expected. However, the defense does look improved already. Bigger, faster, and more aggressive than at any point last season.
  • Thompson throws a bomb to Hutson down the sideline; the pass is ruled incomplete, but a beautiful throw from Thompson, who finally looked confident on a throw.
  • Sadiq drops a 4th-down pass (again, freshman) and the Yellow team takes over.
  • Kenyon Sadiq catches his first pass, turns upfield, and shows why he was so highly-recruited. Unreal speed for the true freshman. The Green team is moving and crosses midfield.
  • In underrated but vital news, new punter Luke Dunne just hit what would be the best punt by a Ducks punter in years. So, we got that going.
  • Rough start offensive for both sides, as the Yellow team, after forcing a punt, goes 3-and-out again. Thompson is 0/4 to start.
  • Troy Franklin, followed by Portland’s Justius Lowe, record back-to-back first downs for the Green team, led by Bo Nix.
  • Mase Funa bats two balls away on the first drive, forcing a 3-and-out. Funa, lined up opposite Jordan Burch, is playing in his fifth spring game for Oregon.
  • Ty Thompson leads the Yellow team to kickstart.
  • It is officially warm in Eugene, optimal weather as the Green team kicks off to begin the game. As expected, a large crowd is on-hand to see Dan Lanning’s second spring game as head coach.
