The Oregon Ducks will open play at the NCAA Tournament on Friday when they face Xavier at the Nashville Regional.

The No. 2-seeded Ducks are set to square off with the No. 3-seeded Musketeers at 10:06 a.m. PT at FirstBank Stadium. Meanwhile, No. 1-seeded regional host Vanderbilt will face No. 4 Eastern Illinois at 4 p.m. PT.

**3-2-1: Previewing Oregon baseball at the Nashville Regional**

Oregon (37-20) captured the Pac-12 Tournament title with a 5-4 win over Arizona, capping off a run of four wins in five days. Earlier this season, the Ducks and Xavier met for a four-game series in Eugene and Mark Wasikowski’s squad emerged with a four-game sweep.

Ninth Inning

Oregon closer Josh Mollerus replaced Dallas to start the ninth inning, and Josiah Cromwick replaced Bennett Thompson at catcher.

Mollerus worked around a leadoff single and got Xavier No. 2 hitter Matthew Derpey to ground into a game-ending double play to seal the win for Oregon.

Eighth Inning

Oregon’s 7-8-9 hitters were retired in order.

Matt Dallas relieved Anderson to start the eighth inning. He produced quick three outs for another scoreless inning.

Seventh Inning

Rikuu Nishida blooped a one-out double, ending the day of Xavier stater Brant Azaulas after 110 pitches.

Colby Shade and Drew Cowley followed with back-to-back doubles of their own to five Oregon a 5-4 lead.

Anderson stayed on for the Ducks and retired Xavier’s 3-4-5 hitters in order. He struck out the last two batters of the inning.

Sixth Inning

Xavier right-fielder Carter Hendrickson and third baseman Grant Stephenson each deliver highlight-reel defensive plays to rob Jacob Walsh and Bennett Thompson of hits in B6 and hold the Musketeers’ lead at 4-3.

McShane hit one batter, then walked another on four pitches to put a Xavier runner in scoring position with two outs. Oregon then turned to right-hander Austin Anderson out of the bullpen.

He produced a pop-up with his first pitch of the afternoon to escape the jam and hold the Musketeers’ lead at 4-3.

Fifth Inning

Oregon’s 3-4-5 hitters were retired in order.

Freshman righty Dylan McShane replaced Grinsell to start the fifth inning for Oregon. He produced three quick out to hold Xavier scoreless.

Fourth Inning

Bennett Thompson led off the inning by reaching on an error. But he was left stranded.

Grinsell had a much better second inning and worked around a two-out walk to hold Xavier scoreless in the fourth.

Third Inning

Tanner Smith and Drew Smith each ripped two-out singles to give Oregon runners in the corners, but both were left stranded.

Freshman lefty Grayson Grinsell replaced Mercado to start the third inning. After getting a quick out, he walked two straight batters on eight pitches — both of whom later scored on Schultz’s single to give Xavier a 4-3 lead.

Second Inning

Oregon took a 3-2 lead when Jacob Walsh smashed a leadoff double, advanced to third on a passed ball, then scored on a throwing error when Xavier attempted to back-pick him at third.

Mercado recorded his first strikeout of the day to end the inning and conclude a scoreless second inning.

First Inning

B1

Oregon ambushed Xavier starter Brant Alazaus for three straight singles to begin the inning. Drew Cowley cut the Musketeers’ lead to 2-1 with a single to right, and then Tanner Smith tied the game with a sac fly to left.

Oregon starter Logan Mercado struggled to spot his fastball early and walked two of the first three batters he faced. Xavier punished for two runs — one on Matt McCormick’s RBI single, and one on Garrett Schultz’s run-scoring double.
