Monday Mario Cristobal Press Conference
Following the win over Washington on Saturday, Mario Cristobal spoke with media via Zoom.
As usual he provided some injury updates and previewed this weeks upcoming contest with Washington State.
Below are a few notes from Monday’s press conference.
Opening Statement:
“Excited and proud for our guys and of our progress. For their performance on Saturday. The weather wasn’t great. After watching film, evaluating everything a lot of progress and some things to work on still.”
Injury Notes:
“Good news on Ryan Walk is it’s not as bad as we thought. It’s not season ending but it will be 3-4 weeks. Jackson Powers-Johnson is good. Steven Jones is good to go. Steve Stephens is a little more significant. We’re not sure when he’ll return.”
On Alex Forsyth:
“He’s been chomping at the bit. Picked back up right where he left off. Not very happy about that penalty at the end. Team first, be smart, teachable moment. He’s ready to roll, happy he’s healthy.”
On Penalties:
“We did good up until play 72 and 73 on offense. Alex and Mycah just went over the edge a little. For the most part good, at the end it got away from us again. Improvement needs to be made.”
On Wazzu’s Offense:
They’re really talented, secondly the scheme, fundamentally sound offensive line. They are tough. They are hard to tackle, they make you miss and run with a lot of power. They’re just explosive.
On Jeffrey Bassa:
“For a guy like Jeffrey, it’s all between the ears. He’s really really smart. Him playing and him being a starter is a part of the process from his arrival back in January. He has learned the physicality, the fits, the passing game came naturally to him. And every week he’s gotten better and better. Those other guys are doing a good job too.”

On Travis Dye:
“I think there is more coming from him. The guys an ultimate competitor. It’s in the family DNA. The pride he takes in the preparation. I wish you could see him behind the scenes and the leadership.”
On Anthony Brown:
“He’s an exceptional competitor. He’s a big guy, I don’t think people realize how big he really is. He understands the game, angles, leverages, intent of the play.”
On Tough Road Win:
“I think it’s something that we are always emphasizing and working. You saw it, it was coming down sideways. You’re going to have to play a certain way. It showed up big. We feel there’s a growing momentum in our locker room. We just want to continue improving.”
On Wazzu:
“This is big of a rival as we have, because of how games have gone the past few years.”
On Defensive Improvement:
“Credit to the coaches and players working at it. When you lose parts, I don’t think the outside world understands how hard it is. When guys get healthy you can defend things the way your defense is designed to. When we are locked in with our physicality, we can be really good. Credit all those guys on the defense, they are really working hard at it and they want to be better.”
