On3 Roundtable w/ Justin Hopkins
Earlier this week I was honored to join On3’s J.D. Pickell on his YouTube show to discuss Oregon. We spent just a touch over 5 minutes talking about Oregon’s upcoming season, new OC, schedule and the secondary.
Some of the highlights include a few of these quotes below.
“This is kind of the year for Oregon,” Hopkins said on the On3 Roundtable. “It lines up pretty well. You’ve got Bo Nix returning for another year off a career year. You do have the new OC (Will Stein via UTSA) but you brought in a ton of transfer pieces the last two years to kind of steady the ship. You’ve done really well in recruiting… I do think there is a playoff contender there.”
“Oregon had a great season last year, but the real big surprise was the defense wasn’t very good,” Hopkins said. “They had a lot of issues in the secondary any time the ball was not thrown toward Christian Gonzalez. They had a lot of issues at linebacker. Generated a little bit of pressure up front, but it wasn’t ideal.

“I think the secondary, offensive line and linebacker were the three positions Oregon was really active in recruiting in the transfer portal in terms of numbers. Christian Gonzalez is gonna leave a huge void. They have high expectations for Khyree Jackson and some of the guys they were able to bring in through the transfer portal.”
“I think that was a huge part in Dan Lanning’s hiring process when he had to go look for a new OC with Kenny Dillingham getting the ASU job,” Hopkins said. “I’m not sure that you could say Will Stein obviously didn’t have the longest resume, but I think he just meshed really well with Bo Nix, the existing offense, some of the same terminology, obviously, not all of it, but I think kind of that continuity was a really big key for them in going after Will Stein.”
