After a rocky start to the season, Oregon baseball bounced back nicely in its first homestand of the year.

On Monday, the Ducks topped visiting St. John’s, 6-0, at PK Park to complete a four-game sweep of the Red Storm and improve to 5-3 on the season.

Ducks’ catcher Josiah Cromwick crushed a three-run homer in the third inning to provide an early lead, and they never looked back. Josh Kasevich went 2-for-4 on the day with two RBIs, and Jacob Walsh went 2-for-4 with a homer.

In just the second start of his college career, Oregon true freshman Tommy Brandenburg tossed 5 innings and surrendered just one hit and two walks while striking out three.

Caleb Sloan (1.0 inning), Rio Britton (1.1 innings), Matt Dallas (2/3 inning) all threw scoreless innings in relief, and Kolby Somers threw a scoreless ninth to close out the game.

Throughout the four-game set, Oregon outscored St. John’s 58-9. When adding that total to the Ducks’ 21-11 win at San Diego last Monday, they have now scored 79 runs over their last five games.

That has resulted in some gaudy statistics for Oregon’s everyday players. Through eight games, Colby Shade is hitting.579, Drew Cowley is hitting .571, Kasevich is hitting .531, Brennan Milone is hitting .485, and Walsh is hitting .424.

The Ducks will be in action again Friday when they begin a four-game set with UC Santa Barbara (5-2) at 4 p.m. at PK Park.

The Gauchos are coached by former Oregon assistant Andrew Checketts, who served as the Ducks’ pitching coach for three seasons under Goerge Horton before taking over the UC Santa Barbara program in 2011.
