Oregon defensive back Cole Martin enters transfer portal
One of Oregon’s top true freshmen has opted to depart the program.
On Tuesday, Ducks’ defensive back Cole Martin announced that he intends to enter the transfer portal.
In 14 games this season, Martin made 21.0 tackles, including 13.0 solo stops, broke up one pass, and grabbed an interception. He played 157 defensive snaps according to Pro Football Focus, which ranks fourth among Oregon’s defensive true freshmen and 25th among the program’s defensive players.
Throughout the season, Martin saw time at both safety and nickel. He was expected to be in line for significant playing time next season as starting safeties Evan Williams and Steve Stephens IV have exhausted their eligibility, and veterans Bryan Addison and Daymon David has entered the transfer portal.
A former 4-star signee, Martin was the No. 216 overall prospect and No. 8 athlete in the 2023 class.
More on Oregon’s transfer portal outlook
Few programs in all of college football experienced a greater amount of transfer portal activity than Oregon did during the 2023 cycle.
A total of 30 Oregon scholarship players entered the portal during the previous two transfer windows — 21 in the winter and nine in the spring. Meanwhile, the Ducks added 14 scholarship players during that same period.
Many of their portal additions — including receiver Tez Johnson, cornerback Khyree Jackson, safety Evan Williams, and right tackle Ajani Cornelius — locked down starting jobs and played key roles during the 2023 season.
This offseason, Oregon will once again look for opportunities to improve its roster by way of the portal.
