The No. 1 Oregon Ducks (13-0, 9-0 Big Ten) will face the No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes (11-2, 7-2 Big Ten) in the 2025 Rose Bowl on January 1. As one of the top four overall seeds, Oregon had a bye in the first round of the playoff.

The rematch with the Buckeyes was set after Ohio State defeated the No. 9 Tennesse Volunteers 42-17 in the first round of the 2024 College Football Playoff on Friday night in Columbus.

The Buckeyes got off to a quick 14-0 lead on the Volunteers and never looked back. Ohio State outgained Tennesse 473 to 256 in total offense. Freshman phenom wide receiver Jeremiah Smith hauled in two touchdown passes as quarterback Will Howard had all day to throw in the pocket.

Tennesse quarterback Nico Iamaleava finished the game throwing for 104 yards, completing 14 of his 31 passes. He was sacked four times and the Vols ran for 152 yards and a pair of touchdowns while averaging 3.9 yards per carry.

New Year’s Day Rematch for Oregon

Oregon won the first matchup against Ohio State earlier this season 32-31 in Eugene on October 12. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel and Evan Stewart were the offensive stars for the Ducks. The Heisman finalist quarterback accounted for three total touchdowns, while Stewart tied Tez Johnson for a team-high seven receptions for 149 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Derrick Harmon and Matayo Uiagalelei had some big plays for the Ducks en route to limiting the Buckeyes to 141 rushing yards. The game came to an end after Ohio State’s Will Howard scrambled and slid in an effort to set up a last-second field goal, but the game clock expired.

Since the first matchup between the Ducks and the Buckeyes, Oregon won the Big Ten Championship and logged wins over then No. 20 Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin. The two wins over the Wolverines and the Badgers both came on the road.

The Buckeyes finished the regular season with a 13-10 loss to the rival Wolverines in the Horseshoe.

Oregon’s path to a national championship was never going to be easy, and their Rose Bowl rematch with the Ohio State will be another must-see game.
