REPORT: Oregon Has Contacted Former 5-Star Wide Receiver Johntay Cook
The 2024 college football season may not be over yet, but that hasn’t limited player movement.
On Thursday morning, Inside Texas (On3’s Texas site) broke the news that Texas sophomore wide receiver Johntay Cook II is no longer part of the Longhorns program. He appeared in 20 total games (per TexasLonghorns.com) during his Texas career and caught 16 passes for 273 yards and two touchdowns.
The news comes just a few days before the No. 5 Longhorns prepare to face the Florida Gators on Saturday in Austin.
With Cook now on the move, a trio of programs, including Oregon have contacted Cook, according to Rivals Director of Recruiting Adam Gorney.
Oregon, along with Ole Miss and Georgia have contacted the former five-star recruit, who signed with the Longhorns as one of four five-star recruits in the 2023 class out of DeSoto High School.
Prior to choosing the Longhorns Cook announced a top three that also included the Ducks and the Michigan Wolverines. He took official visits to Texas, Michigan, Oregon and Ole Miss before making his decision.

As senior Cook was rated a five-star (97.26) recruit according to the On3 Industry Rankings. The same system ranked him the No. 31 prospect nationally, the No. 3 wide receiver and the No. 5 player in Texas.
While it’s far too early to project with any certainty what Oregon’s wide receiver room will look like in 2025, the Ducks will at the very least be without seniors Tez Johnson and Traseshon Holden, who have been major contributors this season.
Junior Adams and the Ducks are also slated to sign three quality wide recevers next month to their 2025 class in five-star plus prospect Dakorien Moore, four-star Dallas Wilson, and four-star Cooper Perry.
