Dan Lanning Comments on Waiver Granting JUCO Players Additional Eligibility
This week the NCAA Board of Directors granted a waiver to permit student athletes who attended a junior college for one or more years, eligibility to compete in 2025-2026.
However, this waiver only applies to student athletes who would have otherwise used their final season of competition during the 2024-2025 academic year.
This new development could affect a number of Oregon football players—some of which were in their final season of eligibility this year.
On Monday Lanning sat down for his Rose Bowl press conference and was asked about any clarity he he’d gotten on how the waiver could affect Oregon players.
He was asked specifically about starting safety Kobe Savage, starting defensive tackle Jamaree Caldwell, offensive tackle Georgia Silva and cornerback Sione Laulea.
“I haven’t put a lot of focus on it right now,” Lanning told reporters over Zoom. “I think there’s time for that. I don’t know that it’ll be as easy as maybe people read into but again, that really hasn’t been my focus right now, and I don’t think it’s really been those players’ focus either. So we’ll cross that bridge when we get there. If there’s an ability to create that or not, we’ll see.”
Savage spent two seasons at Tyler Junior College in Texas. Caldwell spent one season at Independence Junior Community College in Kansas. Silva played three seasons at Fullerton College. Laulea spent two seasons at College of San Mateo.

While we wait to see what ultimately happens for the aforementioned trio, Oregon’s 2025 roster has already begun to take shape.
Lanning bringing in top prep and transfer portal talent
Earlier this month the Ducks signed the No. 2 class in the On3 rankings for the 2025 recruiting cycle.
With the expected departures of multiple starters in the secondary, the Ducks have secured commitments from a number of high profile players in the transfer portal, with their haul ranked No. 4 according to On3.
Former Purdue safety Dillon Thieneman and former Northwestern cornerback Theran Johnson have both announced their commitments to Lanning’s Big Ten program. Thieneman has two years of eligibility.
The current transfer portal window will close on Saturday December 28, but there are a handful of smaller windows for players in bowl games and the college football playoff
