Kenyon Sadiq Previews Illinois in Week 9
Oregon sophomore tight end Kenyon Sadiq met with reporters in Eugene following Tuesday’s practice. He’s taking on a bigger role after veteran Terrance Ferguson had to have his appendix removed last week.
Below are some of his top quotes as well as some analysis.
On what it’s been like preparing knowing he has a bigger role
Sadiq: “I think it’s just always kind of being ready and always kind of preparing the same way. Coaches are pretty big on that. So nothing really changed, obviously it was nice to get in a little more but I wouldn’t say anything really changed.”
On how fun it is to have a bigger role
Sadiq: “It’s a lot of fun to kind of get out there, kind of let loose. Something I’ve kind of wanted to do. Unfortunate circumstance that got there, but it was good to get out there.”
On his thoughts around No. 1 ranking
Sadiq: “It just kind of is what it is. Just gonna keep going.”
On if he felt he was able to show what he can do after the catch against Purdue
Sadiq: “It was nice to get out there. Getting the ball in space, I haven’t necessarily had the opportunity to do (that), so getting out there and doing that, it was good.”

On where he’s grown as a blocker
Sadiq: “That’s my biggest improvement for sure. I feel a lot more comfortable in all areas. Whether it’s perimeter blocking or down on the line of scrimmage. I feel really comfortable just using my technique and lower pad level.”
On his highest mph on the GPS
Sadiq: “It was like 22.3, 22.4, something like that.”
On importance of getting young players play time:
Sadiq: “It’s huge. Even being last year and getting in some of those earlier games, it just means so much for your confidence especially. Just getting that feel for what it’s like on the field, it means a lot to those younger guys. So just getting in and getting done early so those guys can get in early is huge for sure.”
Torres’ Take
Sadiq pops for what he’s able to do after the catch, but he also had a few blocks that really impressed me against Purdue. I’m talking about him putting his defender on his back. The future is bright at the position with Sadiq in the mix and while Ferguson’s injury certainly isn’t ideal, getting Sadiq more snaps for 2025 and beyond could prove to be a silver lining for Drew Mehringer. He’s more of a pure playmaker than a do-it-all tight end right now, but he’s trending in the right direction and his improvement as a blocker should be music to Duck fans’ ears.
