Oregon has landed a commitment from former Tulane Green Wave running back Makhi Hughes. The redshirt sophomore back was on campus in Eugene to visit the Ducks over the weekend.
Hughes is listed as the No. 1 running back and the No. 3 overall player in the transfer portal in the On3 rankings. He’s the second commitment of the day and the eight overall transfer pledge for Dan Lanning after the Ducks landed Malik Benson earlier on Tuesday.
His decision to become a Duck comes after Oregon junior running back Jordan James declared for the 2025 NFL Draft on Monday. Oregon is still awaiting a decision from redshirt junior running back Noah Whittington regarding his future and the 2025 college football season.
The 5-foot-11, 210-pound Hughes spent the last three seasons in New Orleans at Tulane after signing with the Green Wave as a three-star (83.01 per On3 Industry ranking) recruit in the class of 2022 from Huffman High School in Birmingham, Alabama. As a senior in high school Hughes ran for over 1,600 yards, averaged more than eight yards per carry and scored 20 touchdowns.
He is the older brother of incoming Oregon five-star+ plus freshman cornerback and Under Armour All-American Na’eem Offord, who’s also a Birmingham native.

Hughes was forced to miss his entire true freshman season with the Green Wave due to injury. As a result, he has two years of eligibility remaining with the Ducks.
During his two seasons at Tulane he amassed 2,779 rushing yards on 523 carries (5.3 YPC) and 22 rushing touchdowns in 28 career games. He also caught 30 passes for 243 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Hughes will join a Ra’Shaad Samples running back room that features the aforementioned Whittington, as well as Jayden Limar, Jay Harris, Da’Jaun ‘Dink’ Riggs, Jordon Davison and Dierre Hill Jr.
