The Sun Devils are coming off a 17-7 road upset of UCLA last Saturday. Despite missing multiple key players on both sides of the ball, Kenny Dillingham and Arizona State found success by frequently deploying a “swinging gate” offense that they previously had not utilized at any point this season.
Dillingham, of course, served as Oregon’s offensive coordinator last season under Dan Lanning.
“I think it’s clear that Kenny and his staff, they can think outside the box and they’re — Kenny’s similar to me, we’re both high school coaches before,” Lanning said on Monday. “When you have different personnel, you try to figure out how you can utilize them the most and try to create something that your opponent hasn’t prepared for. Obviously, he was able to put some things on film that other teams hadn’t prepared for, and I expect him to give us some of that too. It’s going to be about us being able to in-game adjust and have a great plan for what he goes out there to execute. But he’s trying to put his team in the best position that can win, and he had some success doing some unique things.”
