It was ugly.

Then it was a thing of beauty. Then it was ugly again.

Finally, when DJ James stepped in front of an Ethan Garbers pass with 21 seconds to play, sealing Oregon’s 34-31 win, it was a relief.

Oregon escaped UCLA 34-31 on Saturday after nearly imploding, their 34-17 lead a distant thought. But the defense held tough late, securing the win and allowing the Ducks their second-most impressive win of the season.

Anthony Brown, embattled all season, osculated between masterful and terrible, his two fourth-quarter interceptions neatly wiping out the first three-quarters of play where he was decisive, in control, and — wait for it — throwing the ball down the field.

In the end, Tim DeRuyter’s defense — led by other-worldly Kayvon Thibodeaux and Noah Sewell — did just enough to hold off the Bruins.

Oregon (6-1, 3-1) now heads home to face Colorado while watching teams from around the country collapse in front of them.

Breathe. It’s over.

It was scary, but since again Oregon comes away victorious in the end.
