Kelly Graves took advantage of Oregon football’s home game this weekend as well.

Oregon women’s basketball hosted a big-time 2023 player in Burley (Idaho) star Amari Whiting. It was not her first time to Eugene, but it was an important one as it earned the Ducks her verbal commitment.

The 5-foot-10 guard spoke with ScoopDuck about her commitment and why Oregon was the right choice.

“After my first visit Oregon felt like a good fit, maybe even the best fit for me. I toured several other schools and nothing really ever topped Oregon. The second time back, this weekend, I knew Oregon was home.”

Coach Graves was one of the early offers for Whiting, something she appreciated.

“He was only able to offer from my high school film. He offered before I was able to get back out on the AAU circuit. Which shows he believed in me and I really appreciated that. That was really a big part of this too.”

Whiting offered up some of her other thoughts on Oregon and why she chose to be a Duck.

“I want to go somewhere I can win a national championship. I think I can do that at Oregon. I really clicked with all of the girls and the staff. It’s a good balance of fun but also being good teachers/mentors.”

The four-star actually committed on a day she’ll always remember.

“I committed on Halloween actually. We were eating breakfast in the Wild Duck cafe and we were talking and I just said I’m 100-percent sure I want to be a Duck. He was so excited and the whole staff started cheering in the restaurant.”

Whiting said she doesn’t plan on taking any other visits. She has the option to graduate and enroll early but isn’t sure she will.

She plans on majoring as a physician’s assistant in dermatology.
