More on UO’s move to the Big Ten
On Aug. 4, the University of Oregon Board of Trustees offically approved the Ducks’ move to the Big Ten.
“First off, our players are really excited about that,” Lanning told reporters that day. “I think it’s an exciting opportunity for us. We talk about, ‘What are we looking for at this university?’ And the way that we recruit on a national level, multiple time zones, playing against the best of the best. That’s something our guys are really, really excited about. Obviously, it’s not our focus right now. We’ve got an entire season to play — this is about the 2023 season. That’s what we wanna attack.
“But I think this creates a unique student-athlete experience for our guys moving forward and it certainly sets us up. I really appreciate the job (athletic director Rob Mullens) and the people at the top did looking out for the future of Oregon. I think it really protects us.”

At the time, UO announced that it will prioritize the school’s long-held athletic traditions, “including competition across all sports with Oregon State University.”
As of Nov. 2, neither UO or OSU has offically announced a plan for the two school’s resepctive football programs to continue their traditional rivalrly series. Oregon men’s basketball coach Dana Altman and women’s basketball coach Kelly Graves have each voiced their desire to continue faving the Beavers on yearly basis.
“I think we should play Oregon State. It’ll be a big game for us in November or December, whenever we decide to play it,” Altman said in October. “I don’t have any plans of not playing them; I hope (Oregon State men’s basketball coach Wayne Tinkle) feels the same way. We really haven’t directly talked about it. I sure hope that we’ll play them either in November or December each year and go from there.”
