Oregon's Jacob Walsh named freshman All-American
After one of the greatest offensive seasons ever by an Oregon freshman, Jacob Walsh has been recognized as one of the top newcomers in the country.
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper released its freshman all-American team on Wednesday, and Walsh was named to the team. The first-year star from Las Vegas was one of four first basemen selected by the outlet.
Walsh was the only freshman in Oregon’s opening day lineup and went on to start 55 of the Ducks’ 61 games in 2022. He slashed .295/.414/.436 and hit a team-leading 18 doubles to go with six homers and 38 RBI.
He set Oregon freshman records for doubles and total bases.
Walsh started the first 41 games of the year for the Ducks and was one of the most productive hitters in the lineup during that stretch before falling into a slump in May. Even during that period, though, Oregon coach Mark Wasikowski spoke glowingly of Walsh and his future within the program.
“It takes somebody with some serious strength and mental strength to be able to sustain or go at the end of the year,” Wasikowski said on May 17 after Walsh had delivered a walk-off double to lead the Ducks to victory over Gonzaga. “That’s what you’re seeing from Jacob; he’s not quitting he’s not going about it the wrong way.
