Oregon EDGE Jordan Burch was one of 42 players named to the Lott IMPACT Trophy watch list earlier this week.

Awarded annually to the top defensive player in college football, the Lott IMPACT Trophy also takes an athlete’s character into consideration. Here are the criteria for the award, per the award’s website.

“Established by The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, The Lott IMPACT Trophy honors college football’s best in character and performance. The award is unique because it represents the first college football award to give equal weight to personal character as well as athletic performance from a defensive college player and is the first national college football award based on the West Coast. The IMPACT award is awarded annually to individuals who demonstrate excellence in the field of athletics and recognizes college football’s Defensive Player of the Year who best exemplifies the IMPACT acronym: Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community, and Tenacity.”

A junior edge defender who spent his first three seasons at South Carolina, Burch transferred to Oregon via the offseason and is expected to be the Ducks’ top pass-rusher in 2023.

A former 5-star signee in the class of 2020, Burch racked up 3.5 sacks, 7.5 tackles for loss, deflected three passes, and generated 29 quarterback hurries in 13 games last season.

He generated no shortage of buzz during his first spring with the program.

“I mean, you talk about changing a defense, it starts with having guys with great size up front that have the ability to play and play at a high level,” Oregon coach Dan Lanning said. “Jordan’s done that. … We’re really excited about what he can do for our team. He has a demeanor about himself. And I think when you see him at practice. You see moves, you say, ‘Okay, that’s what it’s supposed to look like.’”

Former Oregon linebacker Justin Flowe, who transferred to Arizona during the offseason, also landed on the watch list.
