Oregon's Micah Williams finishes seventh in 100-meters at NCAA Championships
This was the weekend many believed Micah Williams would cement his status as one of the top sprinters in the world. Instead, Friday brought one of the worst races of the Oregon superstar’s college career.
The owner of the second-fastest 100-meter time ever by a collegian and the second-fastest time in the world this year, Williams entered Friday’s NCAA Championships as a heavy favorite to capture the national title.
But after a strong start, he faded late and never recovered. Williams finished seventh in 10.19 seconds at Hayward Field in Eugene.
That was well off his season- and personal-best time of 9.86 seconds, which he ran at the NCAA West Prelims in May.

Williams, a Portland, Ore., native, already owns the program record at 100 meters and was aiming to become the first Duck to win an outdoor national title in the 100 since Harry Jerome in 1964. He finished third in the vent last season.
Florida sophomore Joseph Fahnbulleh won the race in 10 seconds flat. Tennesee freshman Favour Ashe was second in 10.075, and North Carolina A&T sophomore Javonte Harding was third in 10.079.
Next up for Williams is the USATF Outdoor Championships, which will be held at Hayward Field from June 23-26. A top-three finish there would secure him a spot at the Oregon22 World Championships in Eugene.
