Oregon’s Sept. 2 season-opener is a little over two months away, and there is no shortage of buzz surrounding the Ducks ahead of Dan Lanning’s second season in Eugene.

This week, Pro Football Focus released an updated iteration of its preseason top 25 and listed Lanning’s Ducks just outside the top 10.

PFF tabbed Oregon as the No. 12 team in the nation. USC (No. 11) is the only team listed ahead of the Ducks, and Utah (No. 15), and Washington (No. 21) also cracked the top 25.

Here’s the rundown on the Ducks from PFF’s Max Chadwick.

“Bo Nix is back for another year at Oregon and revived his career in Eugene this past season. The redshirt senior’s 82.3% adjusted completion rate was second in the country in 2022 after placing just 108th across his first three years at Auburn. He’s now one of my top-five quarterbacks in college football and is the No. 2 quarterback prospect in the 2024 NFL Draft, according to PFF’s lead draft analyst Trevor Sikkema. He’ll have the pleasure of throwing to his adopted brother in Troy transfer Tez Johnson in addition to a potential first-rounder in Troy Franklin.”

A deep dive into what Ducks gained, lost in transfer portal

Few programs in college football experienced a greater amount of transfer portal activity than Oregon has over the past six months.

A total of 30 UO scholarship players entered the portal during the previous two transfer windows — 21 in the winter and nine in the spring. Meanwhile, the Ducks added 14 scholarship players during that same period.

Oregon has lost more than twice as many players as it has added since the end of the 2022 regular season. Of course, the sheer number of incoming and outgoing players doesn’t necessarily tell the whole story of the Ducks’ roster transformation.

In terms of offensive and defensive snaps played per season during the 2021 and 2022 campaigns, the players who joined the Ducks during the offseason saw a far greater share of playing time at their respective previous schools than the players who departed Oregon saw during their respective UO careers.

Here’s a breakdown of the snap counts played by each of the Ducks’ additions and departures in 2021 and 2022.
