Oregon Trending For 5-star Safety Trey McNutt

Dan Lanning and the Ducks have added another massive recruit to their haul in the 2025 cycle.

5-star Cleveland (Ohio) Shaker Heights safety Trey McNutt has committed to Oregon. On Saturday the 5-foot-11, 183-pound defensive back chose the Ducks from a final group that also included Texas A&M, Florida, USC and Ohio State. McNutt is an Ohio State legacy and his father Richard McNutt won a national title with the Buckeyes in 2022.

The newest Duck is rated a 5-star recruit (96.52) according to the On3 Industry Rankings. The same system ranks him the No. 20 player nationally, the No. 2 safety and the No. 2 recruit in the state of Ohio.

McNutt took official visits to each of his finalists, with the exception of Ohio State leading up to his commitment. Lanning and the Ducks’ coaching staff hosted him for his finalist official visit to close out the month of June and made a major impression. The five-star delayed his commitment in late July opening up the chance to visit Texas A&M and Oregon once more.

“I had a great time down here Eugene on my official visit,” McNutt told ScoopDuck following the trip. “From the jump they came with the energy. I got off the plane and the whole staff was there. Everybody was there cheering, playing loud music, everything. Just came with energy the whole time. And really, I just had a great time.”

McNutt is the 15th verbal commitment in Oregon’s 2025 recruiting class and continues a summer recruiting tear for the Ducks. He joins Conroe (Tex.) cornerback Dorian Brew, also an Ohio native, and Owings Mills (Md.) McDonogh cornerback Brandon Finney in Chris Hampton’s secondary.

The Ohio native is the third 5-star recruit to commit to the Ducks this cycle in a haul that’s headlined by 5-star wide receivers Dakorien Moore and Dallas Wilson.

With McNutt in the fold Dan Lanning and the Ducks turn their attention to another 5-star recruit in the secondary: Galveston (Tex.) Ball safety Jonah Williams. Williams is ranked the No. 1 safety in the country. Oregon is trending according to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine as the Ducks battle Texas A&M and LSU for one of the best athletes in the country.

Williams is set to make his commitment on August 24.
