Dan Lanning has one of his biggest wins of his young career at Oregon on the recruiting trail. After an exhausting battle with USC and Ohio State for most of the season, the Ducks landed 5-Star EDGE Matayo Uiagelelei.

The 6-foot-5, 265-pounder is the No. 29 ranked player nationally in the On3 Consensus rankings. He’s the No. 4 defensive lineman and No. 5 player in the state of California.

Uiagelelei can play both ways however. There is a chance he moves to tight end in college. Both options are on the table for the versatile star.

Oregon’s ability to pluck him out of Los Angeles over USC is a massive win on the recruiting trail. The Trojans made a huge push down the stretch but the Ducks were able to sway him in the final hours.

The Ducks started signing day off with a bang with the flip of Baylor quarterback commit Austin Novosad. Which is a massive get for Dan Lanning and new OC Will Stein in the wake of the Dante Moore loss.

On a day that at one point looked relatively short on fireworks, so far signing day has delivered for Duck fans.

On3 Scouting Summary

A big jumbo athlete who doubles as a tight end and defensive end for one of the nation’s top high school programs. Has unique movement skills and speed at 6-foot-5 and over 260 pounds. Is able to run with linebackers and some defensive backs at his size. Has shown some improvement as a pass catcher over the course of 2021. Likely has a higher long-term upside as a defensive lineman or even offensive tackle rather than tight end. Can continue to increase his physicality on a snap-to-snap basis.
