Reports: Big-10 Considering Expansion of Current Pac-12 Schools
A new day brings new conference realignment discussions. And today is possibly the biggest news yet.
Multiple outlets, in fact nearly every outlet is reporting the Big-10 is now preparing to look into expanding the conference. (I believe Dan Wetzel of Yahoo had it first.) The reports suggest the B1G is considering adding Oregon and Washington to the conference. The same reports also suggests Cal and Stanford are also being considered as additions. It’s unclear if the conference wishes to expand to 18 or 20 member schools.
This comes on the heels of Tuesday’s updates on the reported Pac-12 media deal largely centered around streaming on Apple TV. The details of the financials are a bit unclear but seemed to indicate a base of around $20 million per school with escalators based on performance and subscription sales.
The reports from today suggests any schools added to the Big-10 would do so in a revised deal which means they would earn less than current members. However that would still likely turn out to be more money per member school than the proposed Pac-12 offer from Kliavkoff.

One source told On3’s Eric Prisbell the Pac-12’s media deal sounded like “rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.”
“If the Pac-12 had a better linear [network] offer – in terms of cash and distribution – they would not be considering Apple,” Neal Pilson, the former longtime CBS Sports president, told On3 on Wednesday. “Half the remaining Pac-12 schools will probably move to the Big Ten and the Big 12, which means the end of the Pac-12. So, we are talking about rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.”
