In just a few short days we will be watching the first college football playoff game under the new format. It will kick off Friday night with the battle for Hoosier state supremacy.

This first round game will feature Indiana traveling all the way to South Bend to visit Notre Dame. That game is set to kick off at 5 PM PST on Friday night.

While we have some time in between this week as Oregon is on a bye, our roundtables will cover the four first round playoff games and our predictions. Here is the first game to discuss.

Collin King:

This is a really tricky game for me, as a hoosier, and actually not particularly caring for either team. That aside, I’m not overly confident in either team but Notre Dame has looked better over the course of the season. Perhaps this is me falling into the trap of Notre Dame playing nobody and winning easily, but Indiana looked terrible after the 1st Quarter against Ohio State and I wonder what they can do against a good defense.

Notre Dame 31 – 20

Max Torres:

Indiana has had a historic season and I’m a big fan of Curt Cignetti, but the Hoosiers haven’t played anyone on Notre Dame’s level. When they did they got destroyed to the tune of a 38-15 beatdown at the hands of Ohio State. The Fighting Irish defense is legit and I think they get it done in the first round.

Notre Dame 31 – 21

Linden Hile:

I’m a huge fan of what coach Curt Cignetti’s accomplished at Indiana this year but in do or die games I’m going with the better team. Notre Dame has a line advantage on both sides of the ball and has a stronger resume than the Hoosiers as well as a clear talent advantage.

While I do think Cignetti vs Marcus Freeman favors Indiana slightly, I’d be surprised if it was enough to overcome the discrepancy in quality of players here. I’ll take the Fighting Irish by a touchdown.

Notre Dame 28 – 17

Jhop:

Quite frankly, I’m not really sure how good either of these teams are. So I guess that makes for a good first round match. I think it will be closer because I don’t know that Notre Dame has really played anyone this season. Is their best win the finale over USC? And the only team Indiana faced that was any good they lost to. So you get this game and it will be close but it won’t feature two very good teams IMO.

Notre Dame 33 – 23
